Pioneering Infection Prevention
At Viobac, we are transforming infection prevention with cutting-edge technology designed to combat catheter-associated infections (CAIs)—a major challenge in healthcare.
These infections, caused by bacterial biofilm formation on catheters, lead to prolonged hospital stays, increased mortality, and growing antibiotic resistance.
Preventing Bacterial Growth and Biofilm Formation on Catheters Using UV Technology
Urinary and central venous catheters are widely used in medical settings but pose a significant risk for bacterial infections due to biofilm formation. Biofilms, which consist of bacterial communities encased in a self-produced extracellular matrix, are highly resistant to antibiotics and immune responses. One promising approach to mitigating these infections is the application of ultraviolet (UV) light at specific wavelengths to inhibit bacterial growth and prevent biofilm formation on catheter surfaces.
Specific wavelengths have demonstrated strong antimicrobial properties with high efficiency in breaking bacterial DNA strands, leading to cell death and prevention replication.

Biofilm Prevention Using UV Technology
Biofilm formation on catheters occurs in multiple stages: bacterial adhesion, microcolony formation, maturation, and dispersion. UV technology helps in two primary ways:
1. Inhibition of Initial Bacterial Adhesion: Regular exposure to specific UV light disrupts bacterial attachment by altering membrane integrity and metabolic activity, reducing the likelihood of biofilm formation.
2. Disruption of Established Biofilms: If biofilms have already formed, periodic UV exposure can penetrate the biofilm matrix and damage bacterial DNA, reducing biofilm stability and making bacteria more susceptible to antimicrobial agents.
VIOBACs UV-technology offers significant advantages:

Non-chemical method of sterilization

Limiting use of antibiotics

Effective against antibiotic-resistant bacteria

Minimal impact on beneficial microbiota when applied selectively

Safety proven for human use due to patented design and technology
Innovative UV Technology
Our patented BaLu™ device uses narrow-spectrum UV light to inhibit biofilm formation before it begins, offering a proactive, non-antibiotic solution. Unlike traditional antimicrobial coatings or antibiotic treatments, BaLu™ continuously prevents bacterial colonization, ensuring long-term protection without promoting resistance.
Proven Performance
In laboratory tests using artificial bladder flow models, BaLu™ achieved a 99% reduction in E. coli bacteria inside catheters within 5 hours, reaching 99.99% within 24 hours. On the outer catheter surface, 100% bacterial elimination was observed in just 3 hours.

A New Standard in Infection Control
By preventing infections before they occur, Viobac’s technology helps:
• Reduce hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) and complications
• Cut antibiotic overuse, slowing antimicrobial resistance
• Improve patient outcomes and shorten hospital stays
• Lower healthcare costs through proactive infection prevention
Viobac’s core UV technology extends beyond urinary catheters, with future applications in central venous catheters, peritoneal dialysis, and oncology care.
Designed for Healthcare Professionals
Developed by physicians, BaLu™ is intuitive and effortless to use:
• Clips onto catheters in seconds, with no need for removal.
• Works autonomously, providing continuous infection prevention.
• Does not interfere with catheter function, ensuring smooth clinical adoption.
In usability tests, nurses reported 100% satisfaction, highlighting its practicality in real-world settings.
